Born in Innsbruck, Ettore Sottsass studied architecture at the Polytechnique of Turin from 1935 to 1939. In 1945, he worked for the Giuseppe Pagano group of achitects,before setting up his own office, The Studio, Milan, in 1947. From 1957, he worked as a design consultant to Olivetti. In 1966, he worked in the New York office of George Nelson. During the 1960 's, he produced several pieces of Anti-Design furniture that were manufactured by Poltronova. In the 1970s, he became a member of Global Tools and in 1979, became involved with Studio Alchimia. In 1980, he co-founded Sottsass Associati with Aldo Cibic, Marco Zanini and Matteo Thun. A year later he established Memphis, a principle executant of post-modernism in the decorative arts. In 1986, he set up the publicity agency, Italiana di Communicazione. Ettore Sottsass died on December 31 in Milan, 2007.
